Existence of unique and rare dog breeds was noticed after archeologists found sculptures of an unknown dog breed in an ancient tomb from the time of Han Dynasty, Chongqing area in 1987 and 2000 . In 1987, a pottery dog unearthed from the Donghanyan tombs of Tuanlong Reservoir, Julong Village, Chongqing, is very close to the shape of today's Chongqing dog. It was verified by the Yongchuan Cultural Relics Management Institute. The original characteristics of the pottery dog are basically consistent with the main characteristics of today's Molosser Chongqing dogs. In April 2000, among the Han tomb pottery burial items excavated in Jiangbei District of Chongqing, there are also two pottery products similar to today's Chongqing dogs, including the guardian in the tomb. The main features of the unearthed pottery dog are the large head, short and wide mouth, round eyes, erect ears and thick limbs.
Since then, more of the tombs from the same era were discovered and more of the dog sculptures of that same type of dog were found.
Experts found out that in the surrounding areas there still can be found functional and agile hunting and guard dogs with strong resemblances to the dog-figurines from the Han tombs. So , Chongqing dog and Chuandong hound was rediscovered and they stay originally for 1000 of years.
The dogs have been found in small cities, such as Da Zu, Lin Shui and Guang An, surrounding Chongqing City. Those areas are very isolated remote places and in every area that breed was called by different names by local people, to name a few East Sichuan breeds :
Chuandong hound is Mountain dog, Hechuan dog, Pak Tin Par dog, Linshui dog and second name for Chongqing dog is Bamboo Ratter . It's very interesting that every type of Sichuan dogs have subtypes ,wilder ,more primitive, smaller proportion , longer muzzle , totally coated or excessive molosser type . The origin of this breed is in the Chongqing region, oldest and Biggest Bamboo Forest in China , which belongs to the eastern part of Sichuan Province, located in the mountain valley of southwest China , These dogs are very rare and most people outside of this region have never seen nor heard of a Chongqing Dog. Many of the locals are not even aware of their existence.
